Difference between Freelancing and Business Process Outsourcing

  • 20th October, 2020

Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is a branch of outsourcing in which routine business tasks of a business, critical or non-critical in nature, are outsourced to a third-party business also known as a BPO Service Provider. These tasks could be operational tasks of a business and are to be executed with quality and reliability. Hence, BPO Service Providers are usually businesses with proper setups with qualified staff, established processes and back ups to deal with uncertainties.

A Freelancer on the other end is an independent, self-employed individual usually working through a freelancing platform and is not part of any formal business organization. A freelancer’s services are mostly utilized for temporary tasks and they are more often working for more than one party at a time.

Sometimes, it is difficult to decide which route is safer for your business tasks and which is more reliable. Should you trust a Freelancer with your business or should you opt for a BPO Service Provider? We have highlighted a few points below that will make your decision-making process easier.

Deciding Factors:

  • Cost

When it comes to outsourcing work, cost is one of the major driving factors. When outsourcing to a Freelancer you might get the best value for money as this is mostly an individual working from home with very less overhead. When hiring a freelancer his/her experience and the location is what mostly influences the price he/she may charge for services.

A Service Provider can be on-shore, near-shore or off-shore. Since a Service Provider is generally an established business with proper office and staff on the payroll, prices may be influenced by the criticality of the process, expertise required for the process and lastly location of the Service Provider.

  • Reliability

It is important for a business to not compromise on the quality of work and its performance when outsourcing tasks. A Freelancer mostly defines their own working hours and rates and are often interested in working only on a single project as they have multiple Clients at the same time. They look to maximize their income by seeking out the best paying projects and where the hourly rate is higher than the last project. Since they are generally not bound to one project they may choose to move to a better paying project if the opportunity arises.

BPO Service Providers on the other hand are looking for long term partnership and have the infrastructure and setup to provide support for ongoing long term projects.

  • Expertise Required

Freelancers are greater in number and offer a very wide range of expertise. So if you are looking for something special you can surely find a freelancer to help you solve your problems at a reasonable rate.

BPO Service Providers on the other hand mostly focus on specialized standard services and they provide these services with best reliability.

  • Time Required

When a one off or a short task is required to be taken care of fast, Freelancers can save your day. They do not require a formal process, are flexible and can get to solving the issue within minutes.

BPO Service Providers are not set up to do one off fast tasks for new customers. They have a formal process and require onboarding before they can start taking care of the tasks.
